Common Questions About Metal Braces

Do metal braces hurt?
Modern braces are much smaller and smoother than in the past. You may feel some soreness for 2-3 days after an adjustment, but new heat-activated wires have significantly reduced discomfort compared to older styles.
How long will I wear them?
Every smile is unique. Average treatment time is between 12 to 24 months. Metal braces are often the fastest way to move teeth for complex cases.
Can I play sports?
Absolutely. We recommend wearing an orthodontic mouthguard to protect your lips and cheeks from the brackets, but you can play football, soccer, basketball, and any other sport you love.
What foods should I avoid?
You should avoid sticky, chewy, and hard foods (like caramel, popcorn, and whole apples) as they can break brackets. Breaking a bracket can extend your treatment time!
Are metal braces cheaper?
Traditionally, yes. However, at Thomas Orthodontics, we offer Gold and Clear Braces for the same price as metal braces. We believe you should choose the style you want, not just the one you can afford.
Do I still need to floss?
Yes! Flossing is critical. We will teach you how to use a "floss threader" or give you tips on using a WaterPik to keep your gums healthy around the brackets.
Will they set off metal detectors?
No. The high-grade stainless steel used in braces is non-magnetic and very light. You can walk through airport security without any issues!
What happens if a wire pokes me?
This is common as teeth move. You can use a small piece of orthodontic wax (we provide this) to cover the poker until you can come in for a quick clip.
